Abstract

The article deals with “weak areas and development policies: what can we expect?” by placing the theme in the economic, social and territorial framework discussed by the authors. These challenges can be covered by three major processes that have no origin in these areas but which have exerted particularly intense and mainly negative action on them. Nor does it seem that the protection of the economy as such has benefited in times of crisis going further to the detriment of the weakest areas that were in the past protected (Fratesi and Rodriguez-Pose, 2016). There is evidence that the settlement structure of our country, having been born to meet economic and political needs that today no longer exist and is today inefficient (Quaini, 1973; Morettini, 2019; Accetturo et al., 2019). The cutting of services and maintenance can lead to land degradation, loss of cultural heritage and deterioration of architectural heritage. It is therefore not absurd that people living in the city are somehow burdened with the maintenance of those places where they willingly go to spend part of their free time.
