Economic crisis and regional resilience
Crisi economiche e resilienza regionale
Abstract
The work examines 'Economic crisis and regional resilience', bringing the territorial dimension into line with the relevant economic and institutional aspects. In recent years, the term “resilience” has become very popular among regional economic scholars and economic geography. This word already widely used in engineering sciences (Holling, 1973) has been used recently in the economic field. The attention to resilience can be explained by the fact that the recent economic crisis has hit Western economies much harder than the previous ones, determining in the population a great sense of uncertainty. Regional Resilience: Resistance and Recovery A simple way to analyze the different incidence of recession on individual regions is that suggested by Martin (2012), using the resistance index and the recovery index. It should also be noted that this data does not take into account the period from 2012 to 2013, when the further increase in the crisis has greatly accentuated the decline in employment in all productive sectors. In this article, the concept of “resilience” has been used to analyse the impact of the last economic recessions on the employment of Italian regions.
